Madrona
Madrone trees have fascinated me ever since I moved to the West Coast of the US. When the madrone sheds its bark, it reveals such a human skin, mottled by occasional human-like formation--a dimple, navel (innies and outies), an elbow, a nipple. And as an artist, I wondered how to blend reds & greens as seamlessly as the madrone.
I made a sketch & photo of this particularly beguiling tree in February of 2008 on San Juan Island, at a small bed and breakfast just outside of Friday Harbor called the Dragonfly Inn.
Here I'm working with a very soft paper with oil pastels. The exposed "skin" I worked very smooth, burnishing the oils into the paper as flat as possible using paper stumps. But the bark I wanted to stand up by building the oil pastels into a higher relief. |
